Is it equal to percent of damage blocked?
And how do horn attacks affect it?

I believe it is-- I don't remember the exact formula, but yeah, I think it might be quite simply percentage damage blocked (from regular attacks) = defense.
Pretty sure horns reduces defense by like 80%. Some other attacks also reduce defense, like soundbeam tower beams. Sorry, I don't recall the specifics...
