It's official, the referendum has passed and Croatia is to enter the EU in 2013.
Rejoice.

Yaaay! Now all the other European countries will have someone cool but unexpectedly wise to turn to in their times of trouble.
Like the Fonz.

Yeah, no. We do not intend to affect the decisions of the EU, we just want to get away from the rest of the balkans, milk their welfare funds dry, get a puppet government up to finally put the country in order, explore the new market with our superior products and emigrate to Germany or the UK more easily.
In short, the EU won't be getting anything from us, we'll just take anything we can.

Finally, all those poor Croatians can get out of Croatia.
P.S. Can Australia join the EU? I'd like to milk some welfare cows. And we've technically had a puppet government forever. 'Cept the queen's forgot to pull any strings since Gough so mostly our politicians just lie there in a heap.

Even if you do manage to get in the EU, you'd actually have to pay for the membership. Welfare funds are only available to countries whose GDPPC is lower than the EU's average, which is around $15000. Croatia's GDPPC is about $6000, so yeah.

Hey, fuck you guys. We'll make our OWN European Union.
It's just that we're the wealthiest country in our region, if we're talking about per capita :/. Shit, we're probably the wealthiest country in everywhere, per capita, because there's only the three of us living here.
Why did it take Croatia so long to join up if it's essentially just a big bag of free money? Don't tell me it was pride.

Don't forget we went through an incredibly violent war regarding our indpendence and switching to capitalism instead of communism. The privatisation that happened in the 90 was supposed to be a good thing, but in the end organised crime prevailed and we're a country governed pretty much by criminals. We also had to conform to the EU's laws and policies, not to mention arresting the alleged war criminals. Which took ages since they were hiding for a long time.
To add to all of that, serbia, our nemesis, has much more political power being allies with the Russians and the English and so forth. They of course tried their best at slowing the process down, England accepted our request only a couple of years ago.

... Yes. Yes, I have to imagine that would make things difficult for you guys. The hell did Serbia get friendly with both England and Russia?
Reckon things'll get better if Serbia gets EU clearance too? Can't imagine it would make everybody hate each other less, but hey.

Allies might have been too strong a word. But it's a fact that the Russians offered support to serbia in the recent Kosovo incident, and the UK leant towards the serbs in 91 by issuing a weapons embargo, effectively leaving us unarmed facing the second largest army at the time.
Not to mention the lack of justice in the recent Hague war trials where the entire Croatian military was proclaimed a criminal organisation based on falsified evidence, unbiased "witnesses" and quotes pulled out of contest. Our general at that time got 24 years of prison. 3 serbian civillians died in the military action for which they were arrested.
Let's take a look at the serbian trials. They got arrested for slaughtering 5000 bosnian civillians (Srebrenica massacre), beseigeing a city for several months, pounding it to submition with artillery and then using the remaining population for target practice(Ovčara massacre). They also used artillery on cities with no military targets at all using ammunition that is illegal according to the Geneva convention. The longest sentence their generals got was 4 years.
6000 civillians dead, dozens of Geneva convention rules broken against the death of 3 civillians dead under dubious circumstances. 4 years of prison and 24 years of prison respectively. A bit one-sided, isn't it?

That... Hm. Hang on. I'd make one of the insightful and wise comments for which I am legendary, but I just found out there's a bushfire coming, so I've got to fix up the house. I'll get back to you.
