So ye've probably all heard the idea. Blother and Mut's plan to balance Tel by assembling a crack team (preferably Dom, Rocks, Mut, Blother, Sniper, Revan, maybe some other folks, I dunno) of... Balancers. This is something we should talk about.
Firstly, if this goes ahead (and I'm not sure it will. I don't see much enthusiasm for the idea, except from Blother and Mut), how much leeway are we going to give these guys? I think we should give them pretty much free rein on balancing the mod. Obviously we'd still have to get the final word, but if we don't let them have pretty much all their own way they'll never be happy.
That said, we need to maintain Tel's focus on realism. If they were to suggest, for instance, giving creatures inappropriate abilities (fuckin' Smod) or grossly inappropriate statistics, well, that wouldn't be okay. Which is why we do still need to have the final say. I wonder if they'd be happy with this. I do actually wonder that if we impose any limits whatsoever they'll just get grumpy (NO SIZE 10 LEMMINGS?).
We also have to make sure it's still fun for newbies and casual players, like me and Matt respectively. This also might introduce compromises I'm not sure the balance team will be comfortable with. To be honest I'm not sure they'll be comfortable with ANY compromises, because there only needs to be the slightest hole in the mod for it to be considered imbalanced by their standards, which is where we start running into problems.
Furthermore, what about the people actually in the balance team? Mut and Blother definitely should be there, and Dom too, because he seems to be particularly vocal about Tel balance. Sniper might be quite helpful, though given his fiery hatred of all things Tellurian, he might also just be obstructive.
Rocks makes me herp derps a bit. Largely because I don't want to bother dealing with him, and because I think he's the one most likely to make vastly inappropriate changes rather than stick to the priority of realism. I don't know. People say we need him, but people also say he's vastly overrated. If he can be made to compromise he could be useful. I don't reckon he'll WANT to help, though. Last I heard he was busy off plotting with the Revan.
Which brings me, obviously, to Revan. Him I don't think I want, because him we don't need. The only function I can see him having is keeping Rocks under control, because those two seem to be relatively close. Perhaps I'm just biased against him, but I don't see why we should bother to put up with him given his lack of relevant skills. I mean, he didn't even balance CC, and he has this whole agenda about getting the CC animals in Tel. If he could Actually get hold of the source code, then maybe things would be different, but until then, why put up with him?
I hope you're happy, Blother.
