Source code.
What is it?
What language is it in?
What do we have to do to get it?
Once we get it, what do we DO with it?
Del and I are in a position where we know a couple of coders. Or at least I do. And I mean, Del's doing programming at the moment, so.
From what I understand, it's contained within the game files... So how do we get at it? Someone must know Something.

1) It's the open source code of the game, as it was coded while it was being made. It's supposed to be thoroughly explained and stuff.
2) Probably C++, ME code is probably LISP, which I know because it uses sexps for triggering events in the trigger editor. I know that language well.
3) Beg Relic for it. At present, we can't really gather anything from teh .dlls which aren't explained at all.
4) Grab an experienced coder and first learn what all the hooks do. Then, after a year or so, start doing srs business like adding new buildings.
Now to clear some common misconceptions about the source code. If it is made public, it does NOT mean we can distribute it freely. We still need microsoft to make its part of the license public, which means all the formats, such as .sgb, or other stuff unique to IC.

As great, no, awesome, no AWESOMAZINGFUCKINGTASTIC as IC is, I'm not entirely sure it's worth putting THAT much time and effort into considering the current size of the community. But, if you're wiling to try and do something, then gogogo.

I'd be totally willing... But I'm not sure exactly what we have to Do. Besides begging Relic, is there no other way we can obtain it?
Matt was talking about looking into total conversion mods... I'm keen for that.

Problem is that almost no one would play it. :/ Though it does sound cool. Total Conversion mods can be made with the SDK, so no begging necessary. You'd still need to learn C++ though.

Visser, my dear, I give not one shit that no one would play it. Do you think a total conversion mod could acheive that dodge thing I mentioned in that other post?

... Okay. I may or may not have hunted down the General Manager for Relic Games on Facebook and sent him a two-page letter.

Uhh, today's size of the community actually means nothing. FreeSpace was pretty much in the same state when its source code came out, and today it grew well over 500k hits per month.
Just saying.

It's the same thing, really. We have a semi-loyal community that has exhausted everything it can do without the source code, and has began dying out. It's been the same with FreeSpace in 2003.
As I said, the community will grow if it's released. We might even get a few of totally outsider coder working on a TC that has nothing to do with IC, as it has been suggested many times on the Relic forums.
