Ok. I'm sure we all know what spore is, right? Well, for any noobies out there, spore is a god type game where you create a cell and evolve it into a spacefaring civilization. The core concept of the game was alright, but it was badly maimed by EA's persistance to keep it age appropriate, as well as keeping certain parts locked away, like the water stage, gore, the extended cell editor, the grox parts, city stage, other forms of navigating the environment, and lots more. I'm going to list a couple of things that could be improved in spore that would make it more appropriate for mature players and more realistic.
1. the social abilities in creature stage. Let me get this straight. You don't see a flock of ostriches go around singing, dancing, and charming other savannah denezins, now do we? If one species is going to "befriend" another species, it would usually be through helping said species, like helping a herd of herbivores eat from plants and warning them of an incoming predator. So if we look at spore in a real life light, then helping another species do something, instead of singing, dancing, and shaking thy ass, is the only real way to befriend a species.
2. Creature stage combat. I cannot stress this enough. In the original spore trailer from 07, the willosaur was brutally beating a smaller species into submission, something which sadly cannot be shown in a kid friendly game. When a creature is attacking another creature, It should be more realistic, like landing precision bites to vital parts, relying on your pack members to help you in attacking and killing a bigger species, relying on venom and wait for the creature to die, land an aerial attack if you're a flying creature, or drag unsuspecting prey into the water if you're a water creature or amphibious. The spit weapons could be used to deter attackers, not lure prey in.
3. Anthropomorphism Abounds! For a game where you can mindlessly om nom nom on an opponent when it's dead, there is a whole lot of cartoonish actions. For example, a creature that isn't even close to sapience uses human like expressions, hand gestures, and dances. Also a cell should not be able to speak or make expressions.

Out of all of Spore's faults, this is what you choose to criticise? Of course it's kid-friendly and silly, that's what Maxis intended.
Why not pick on the laughable attempts at RTS that were the Tribal and Civilisation stages or the complete and utter disappointment that the Space stage was?
I think the only thing I actually agreed with was the combat bit and even there, not entirely.

I think the only thing I actually agreed with was the combat bit and even there, not entirely. If you actually saw the 2005 demo of spore, it wasn't the watered down kiddy version that we have today. I also agree with you on the later stage points. Those could've been executed much better. Also, just saying, will wright's vision of spore wasn't to be kid friendly. |

He was making it for Maxis. Who cares what it was supposed to be? End result is all that matters.
Spore's terrible, blah blah blah, the dynamics are unrealistic, etc. etc., but making them realistic is... Rather a lot to ask from a game. Evolution simulators are a relatively new genre of game, you can't expect them to make a good one straight up. Eventually software and hardware will progress to the stage where we can simulate proper ecosystems and galaxies, but until then we're limited to cartoony and repetitive species interaction.
That said, it could've been better, yes. A lot. Especially Galactic Adventures. That was a motherfulging nightmare.
The worst thing about Spore is the community and how it encourages bitchiness. Because it really does. In fact, the community got so bad it atrophied and pretty much everyone who was any good at the game bailed.

I never felt the need to even pirate spore, let alone buy it.
That should be a signal there's something wrong, and I'm not even implying my taste is fact(no, really, I'm not). If a game seems so underwhelming and boring or just looks like it won't work out for you to the margin you don't even try it, there's definitely something wrong.

Spore just tries to be too much at once. I really like the game, especially after such a hassle to get it installed properly without defects from patches and other issues. I haven't really messed with any mods yet but there's some I'm interested in, such as Dark Injection which includes a BUNCH of new parts of creations ported from DarkSpore/ Here's some of my points. - The lack of Aquatic stage makes me a sad panda. throwing legs on a cell for it to walk on land is such a jarring transition. - Lack of species diversity, everything is a walking egg-laying species, only diverse by their diet or disposition. No sea creatures, No birds etc. - Civ stage is kinda boring, should be folded into Space stage for managing colonies and rebellions, that would be neat. Civ should be more like the SIms or something, SimCity maybe? ( I never played SImCity so I'm unsure how it actually plays) - Getting lost during Space Stage is incredibly frustrating. Should have the ability to plot a course through coordinates and whatnot to reach certain destinations, having to manually pilot your ship around the galaxy can be rather tedious and fickle. - Creature Creation needs some more diversity in terms of biology and anatomy, And the ability to alter the stats of parts to maintain a look without making something that's going to be garbage because it can't dance very well. Also the paint schemes should also have some diversity, which would include the paint brush tool and things like clothing for later stages. Everything feels very simplified. - The ability to set a race's personality upon its creation, so if you make some badass monster, you don't have to encounter it via the random generator making it some high-pitched sketchy trader archetype. Creation should extend to what environment the creation can survive on, what the homeworld is like, philosophy, culture, and architecture. I'd also like more abilities almost like IC, stuff like poison and camo and whatnot. Like...if in IC you were taking DIRECT control of a creature you made. in an adventure...that'd be awesome. Overall, i'm happy with it so far, going to mess with mods soon, and I was able to make a passable Puppeteer from Larry Niven's Ringworld so I'm happy about that  |

Spore just tries to be too much at once. I think you've identified the core problem here. Unless you're an incredibly quality developer that knows what its doing(a'la Valve or Relic a couple of years ago), you shouldn't even attempts games as relatively complex as this. |

yes that is why it is called the Creature Creator
and there are strong religious overtones throughout the game.
But on a serious note, Spore should be more franchise than single game.
Perhaps using some form similar to Mass Effect where you can port saved species from game to game, evolving them until you GET to the Futuristic Space stage.
I want to give DarkSpore a shot, the creator seems well suited for combat.
